Yessica, 26, is in her fourth year of college, studying nursing at the Instituto Tecnológico Superior Escuela Técnica Para la Salud. She lives at home with her mother, a homemaker, and her two younger brothers. She is currently enrolled in Nursing Fundamentals (her favorite class), Ethics, and Pharmacological Epidemiology.
Why do you think your education is important?
My education will help me become a better person and, one day, a professional.
Describe someone who has inspired or motivated you:
First and foremost, my mom, because she has helped and supported me through everything.
How has the crime/violence in this country affected you personally?
I don’t feel safe using public transportation and I’m scared that something will happen to my family.
How do you think positive change can come about in your community or country?
Through the creation of educational programs and safe, healthy means of recreation so that young people don’t get involved with the gangs.
What do you do in your free time?
I help out around the house, go to church and I like going on walks.
What is your favorite music?
Songs of worship, romantic music and cumbia.
What are your best qualities?
I like helping people, I’m caring, respectful, kind, attentive, enthusiastic and hard-working.
